Ivan Snigirev
Painting, video installation, video art
1978, Kataysk, Russia
Ivan Snigirev studied art formally and in 2001, by the final year of his Art Graphics degree Ivan and his classmates Vladimir Seleznev and Evgeni Koltsov formed an art group Zer Gut. In 2002, the graduation project presented by Zer Gut was the exhibition "The Experience of the Myth Creation". The centerpiece of the exhibition was an abandoned house in Nizhny Tagil turned into an artistic installation. The art group was active until 2005 and engaged in video art, performances and painting and participated in collective exhibitions in Russian cities, including a special project of the 1st Moscow Biennial of Contemporary Art.
Now Ivan Snigirev works with painting and creates video installations. His works always cast doubt on the reality of what is happening around him, and often he transfers the familiar objects of the material world into a virtual one. In his exhibition "Voinushka" (2013 and 2016), he directs his attention to military equipment: impressive images of tanks and soldiers' figures step out from the monumental canvases and "seize" the walls around.

In works of the exhibition "Unaccounted Spaces" (2013), the artist discovered aesthetics of everyday objects - pipes and electric wires. In the interactive video installation "Plush World" (2018), the artist animates a throw with prints of deer.
In Soviet times it was a product of mass consumption, with millions of people decorating the walls of houses with such throws. Millions of Soviet children saw these deer and the forest around them come to life in their dreams. Those innocent childhood dreams have now been replaced with gadgets and computer games. Combining the past and present, the artist recreates the throw from his childhood in a computer game, which one can enter to with the help of new technologies.
